From research spanning decades, conducted all over the world we know how powerful music can be and no surprises for guessing which genre of music has the greatest influence!

Whether you’re a sucker for the nostalgia brought on from hearing Slade, Wizard or Wham or you’re more into current music offerings, there’s no doubt, Christmas music is especially powerful and evocative.

Whilst we can easily form emotional connections with any piece of music we hear, the research shows us that Christmas music is especially powerful at creating these connections. It appears that Christmas music gets to the core of our enjoyment at this time of year with over 85% of those surveyed agreeing that ‘Christmas without Christmas music would not be as good’ and it helps to evoke strong emotions and memories.

Research also revealed that 75% of respondents said that hearing Christmas tunes helped them get into the festive spirit, with 25% of those surveyed saying they believe they became more generous whilst out shopping for Christmas gifts when they could hear Christmas music being played in the background.

In conclusion, it’s clear that Christmas background music can be a powerful business tool when ramped up appropriately.

A word of caution

We stress the word ‘appropriately’ when scheduling your Christmas tunes! Be aware, whilst the research highlighted what the public like, it also shone a light on what we don’t like, including…

  • Christmas music played in November.
  • Permanent 100% Christmas music being played in a venue.
  • ‘Christmas Don’t be Late’ by Alvin and the Chipmunks.
